Margaret Gray of Sparta, North Carolina, has been named the local program co-coordinator for Special Olympics Alleghany County effective immediately, according to Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) President/CEO Keith L. Fishburne.
Following her years of service in the United States Navy and with the American Red Cross, Gray began volunteering as a firefighter and emergency responder. She has coached basketball, powerlifting and softball with Special Olympics Alleghany County and has served on the local program committee.
As local program co-coordinator, Gray will assist Linda Tucker, who has been serving as coordinator for Alleghany County, in the implementation of Special Olympics activities within Alleghany County by leading a volunteer committee that will provide sports training and competition opportunities along with health and wellness initiatives for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This involves recruiting, training and managing volunteers, increasing athlete participation and raising funds in support of the program.
