Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) athletes returned home from the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, with medals and ribbons recognizing their athletic achievements. Joining nearly 1,500 Special Olympics athletes from 100 delegations, SONC athletes Trenton D’Agostino of Watauga County (snowboarding), Stephen Foster of Buncombe County (Alpine skiing) and Ashley Tanner of Mecklenburg County (figure skating) represented Special Olympics USA during the World Winter Games, held from March 8 to 15.
Trenton D’Agostino competed in the following snowboarding events in Bardonecchia:
- Giant Slalom: Gold Medal
- Slalom: 4th place
- Super Giant Slalom: Gold Medal
Stephen Foster competed in the following Alpine skiing events at Sestriere:
- Giant Slalom: Bronze Medal
- Super G: Silver Medal
- Slalom: 4th place
Ashley Tanner competed in the following figure skating events at Tazzoli Ice Arena:
- Free skating – level 3: Silver Medal
Special Olympics USA delegates competed in the following sports during the World Winter Games: Alpine skiing, cross country skiing, DanceSport, figure skating, floorball, snowboarding, snowshoeing and short track speed skating.

Since 1968, the organization has used the transformative power of sports to improve the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Nearly 45,000 athletes in North Carolina inspire thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics statewide.
