Rowan County

Welcome to Special Olympics Rowan County!

Sports Offered

We offer a variety of team and individual sports for Special Olympics athletes in Rowan County. Some of our sports offer a skill-building competition that assists in athletes’ progress in their sport. All Special Olympics athletes must have a completed physical before participating in any sports.


Athletics

  • When is it held?
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the annual Spring Games held each April at West Rowan High School  and at the SONC Summer Games in May/June.
  • Registration is open during the month of January. To register as an athlete or volunteer, contact the local coordinator.

Basketball

  • When is it held?  Practice begins in August and runs through November. We are currently seeking coaches and volunteers.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the SONC Summer Games in May/June.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County offers both 3v3 and 5v5 teams.

Bocce

  • When is it held?  Practice is held at Ellis Park beginning in August and runs through November. To register as an athlete, please contact the local coordinator.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the SONC Fall Tournament in November.

Bowling

  • When is it held?  Practice is held at Woodleaf Lanes beginning in February and runs through June.
  • Middle and High School students practice during the school day, while adult athletes practice in the afternoon.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the Local Tournament in April or the SONC Summer Games in May/June.

Cheerleading

  • Coming late 2021 – Check back for more information

Equestrian

  • When is it held?  Practice is held at Saving Grace Farms beginning in June and runs through September.
  • To register as an athlete, please contact coach Andi Taylor at 704-773-0202.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the SONC Equestrian Tournament in September.

Golf

  • When is it held?  Practice is held at Corbin Hills Golf Club beginning in August and runs through November.
  • To sign up, contact coach Jenny Buchanan at 704-859-1162 or buchananj41@gmail.com.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the SONC Fall Tournament in November.

Volleyball

  • When is it held?  Practice is held beginning in March and runs through May.
  • We are currently seeking coaches and volunteers to assist with our volleyball program. If interested, please contact the local coordinator.
  • Special Olympics Rowan County athletes have opportunities to compete at the SONC Summer Games in May/June.

Global Messengers

Global Messengers are Special Olympics athletes who have been trained in public speaking to serve as ambassadors for the organization.  They can recruit potential athletes, volunteers and sponsors through public presentations. To schedule a Global Messenger appearance, please contact the local coordinator.
