Andrew Fiumara of Greensboro- 2014 SONC August “Athlete of the Month”

August 4, 2014 | Categories: Athlete of the Month

Andrew Fumara (1)Spreading love for the game of bowling to other athletes is keeping Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro athlete Andrew Fiumara very busy! The 33 year-old has been involved with Special Olympics for over 25 years as both an athlete and a volunteer! Andrew currently competes in bowling, and is a Special Olympics aquatics coach.

This is one athlete who has turned his attention to helping others who share the same passion for bowling. Andrew volunteers his time with the Masters Bowling Program, where he assists wheel chair bowlers who use a ramp to play. Andrew can be found alongside his parents on Wednesday evenings volunteering with the program. “I work with the ramps, make sure they’re in place. I’ve been volunteering for five years and really enjoy it,” said Fiumara.

Andrew’s favorite Special Olympics memories include winning a gold medal in swimming a few years back and achieving the unthinkable, bowling a perfect game in March of 2014. “I remember the exact date, I was so excited that day. I was subbing for a friend who told me to go up there and do what you got to do, don’t think about it just do it,” said Fiumara. The excitement began when he bowled a strike, little did he know at the time he was in the midst of a perfect game. “The first person I called was my parents,”said Fiumara with pride. He was presented his score sheet from the day, a ring, and a watch to commemorate his impressive accomplishment.

This active athlete is also a full-time employee of Harris Teeter and is proud to say October marks 15 years with the company. When Andrew is not working he dedicates all of his time to Special Olympics. Congratulations Andrew for being 2014 SONC August “Athlete of the Month”!
