Special Olympics North Carolina and Wilkes County lost one of its brightest lights on April 7 with the passing of Susan Allen, a woman whose life was defined by service, compassion and unwavering dedication to others. For more than three decades, Susan stood at the heart of Special Olympics North Carolina, becoming one of its longest‑serving and most beloved local program coordinators. Her leadership, her energy and her belief in the potential of every athlete shaped a legacy that will endure for generations.
Susan’s 36‑year teaching career revealed early what so many would come to know well: she had a gift for lifting others up. She poured her heart into her students, and that same passion naturally expanded into her work with Special Olympics. For 32 years, she guided the Special Olympics Wilkes County program with a rare combination of strength, humility and joy. She championed athletes of all ages, ensuring they had opportunities not only to compete, but to belong, to grow and to shine.
Even after retiring from teaching, Susan never slowed down. Service was not something she did — it was who she was. She continued to volunteer tirelessly with Special Olympics and extended her care to countless community organizations, including Blue Ridge First in Families, the Child Abuse Prevention Team, Guardian Ad Litem as a Child Advocate, Wilkes DSS as a Community Advocate, the Humane Society, and Wilkes County Cruisers. Her advocacy earned her numerous awards, but Susan never sought recognition. Her reward was seeing others thrive.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Reins‑Sturdivant Chapel, 270 Armory Rd., North Wilkesboro, NC. Burial will follow at a later date at Gaston Memorial Park.
Susan Allen leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community. Her work made Wilkes County stronger, kinder and more connected. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her — and all who will benefit from the path she so faithfully paved.
May her memory be a blessing and may her example continue to guide us forward.
