Special Olympics Unified Sports® is an inclusive sports program that combines an approximately equal number of Special Olympics athletes (individuals with intellectual disabilities) and Unified Partners (individuals without intellectual disabilities) on teams for training and competition.
Special Olympics North Carolina has partnered with college campus recreation programs to offer Unified Sports Flag Football to college students and Special Olympics North Carolina athletes in surrounding areas. In this recreation model of Unified Sports, assessment days are used to introduce the students (who will be Unified Partners) and Special Olympics athletes to the sport of flag football and create teams to form a Unified Sports Flag Football League. On competition days, each team will have one game. Teams will be seeded for playoffs based on their overall record during the competition days. Two playoff days will determine the Intramural Recreation Unified Sports champion. College students must register through University Recreation and Special Olympics athletes should contact their local coordinators.
