More than 500 athletes train year-round in 11 different sports and compete in local, regional and state-level events. Special Olympics New Hanover County partners with Wilmington Parks and Recreation for use of facilities and equipment. Our offices are located at 302 Willard Street in Downtown Wilmington.

Special Olympics World Games 2015 took place in Los Angeles this summer and our local cheerleaders from New Hanover County got to be a part of it.

Fall Sports have already begun! Below is a list of the sports offered in the fall and the practice information. Remember, in order to participate, an athlete must be at least 8 years old, have an intellectual disability or other related developmental disability, and have a completed Athlete Participation Form on file with our office.
FALL SPORTS SCHEDULE
Bocce: Practices will be Wednesdays at Empie Park 5-6:30pm
Bowling: Bowling every Thursday from 2:45 – 4:45pm at Cardinal Lanes on Shipyard
FREE Local Tournament: October 3rd Cardinal Lanes Shipyard. See below for more info!
Soccer: Practice will be every Tuesday 6:00pm beside FFF on 10th Street
Golf: Please call 341-7253 for details; practices begin in August
Tennis: Practices are held Thursdays 4:30 Althea Gibson Tennis Complex
Basketball: Practices will begin on Tuesday, November 17th – Feb at Williston Middle School, 401 South 10th Street, Wilmington, NC.
MedFest: Special Olympics NC will offer a MedFest, which is a FREE way to get an updated participation form, at the Convention Center on September 18.
Volleyball Clinic: Come learn how or just come play volleyball at our clinic at Wilmington Christian Academy on September 21. No experience necessary.
Flag Football: League play that will begin in Oct at UNCW. Registration is required.
Dance: Halloween Dance will be held on Friday, October 30th at Halyburton Park.
Award Banquet: TBA
Fun Field Day: A fun filled field day at the Wilmington Christian Academy. Open to all Special Olympics athletes. The event will be held in November.
Ashley High School, Hoggard High School and Laney Highs Schools are all pleased to be able to participate in Project Unify this past year. Project UNIFY is an inclusive program that educates and activates our youth into leadership roles through schools for Special Olympics North Carolina, and is made possible by funding from private donors and the US Department of Education.
