Kimberly Bowers has a smile that lights up every room that she walks in to. This 31 year-old athlete from Davidson County has been involved with Special Olympics for 15 years, and according to Mary Anne Brown, the Special Olympics local coordinator for Davidson County, she deserves two awards: one for all of the great things she does with Special Olympics, and another for the smile that she always has on her face.
When Kimberly first got started with Special Olympics, she was very shy and wouldn’t talk to anyone. She started out competing in gymnastics, but has branched out to compete in athletics, bocce, basketball and bowling. These days, Kimberly is an athlete representative for her local Civitan group, and is very involved in her community. Her favorite sport to compete in is athletics, especially the 100m and 400m walk events. Kimberly has been practicing her fast walking a lot lately as she prepares for the SONC Summer Games May 31-June 2.
Brown said that Special Olympics helped Kimberly to “build confidence, bring her out of her shell, and really blossom into the person that she is today.”
Kimberly’s most memorable experience with Special Olympics was traveling with her family to Ames, Iowa for the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games. It was the first time she had ever been on a plane, and was a totally new experience for her. At the Games, Kimberly competed in athletics events, and brought home three silver medals. During the trip to Iowa, one of her highlights was meeting the founder of Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver!
When she is not participating in Special Olympics events, Kimberly loves to watch movies, listen to country music, and keep up with NASCAR racing. Kimberly was invited to speak at Richard Childress Racing for an event, and impressed everyone there with how much she knew about the drivers and the cars that they drove.
With all of her success in Special Olympics competition, as well as her involvement with her community, Kimberly is definitely deserving of the Special Olympics NC June Athlete of the Month.
Congratulations Kimberly on being named the 2013 SONC June Athlete of the Month!
