The NBA Playoffs are underway and that is a big deal in at least one house in Lewiston, NC! Special Olympics Bertie County athlete, Isaiah Jones, is in front of the TV decked out from head to toe in his Miami Heat gear. The 14-year-old wears a Heat T-shirt, shorts, hat, and everything matches even his socks and shoes.
“He’s a huge fan,” says his mother Margaret Keys-Jones. “He loves basketball and he loves Lebron James! And he is very fashionable every day. His outfits always have to be very matchy-matchy all the way down to the shoes and socks. So even in a Miami Heat T-shirt he is looking sharp. ”
Isaiah has always loved sports and Special Olympics has allowed him to be involved from a very young age. His pre-k class was involved in the Special Olympics Young Athletes program so he has been participating since he was four! He competes in soccer and athletics. He loves to run!
“Nobody can tell Isaiah he doesn’t run fast,” laughed his mom. “He’s so proud and we are so proud of him. Special Olympics has given him something to belong to and see that he can do so many things. It’s helped him believe he is a winner!”
At the 2013 Special Olympics NC Summer Games, Isaiah earned a gold medal and a silver medal in track and field events. It was an incredible moment in his Special Olympics career both for him and also for his family!
“It was emotional for me,” said his mom. “It was quite an accomplishment and a very proud moment for me as well as him! Even today he is still bragging about those medals! We can’t wait to come back to Raleigh!”
Isaiah will be back on the track turning up the heat on his competitors on Saturday May 31! Good luck Isaiah and congratulations on being named the 2014 Special Olympics NC May “Athlete of the Month”!
