Directors’ Message – April 2017

Dear Fellow NC Torch Runners,

We hope this letter finds all of you doing well. We are over a quarter of the way through our fundraising year for the NC Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign for Special Olympics NC and our total raised to-date is over $350,000!  We know many of you and your agencies are continuing fundraising activities so keep up the good work! Please continue to notify us about your events by sending an email to

The 2017 NC Torch Run Conference was a huge success. We had over 300 attendees. Please remember our theme for this year is “Just One More” meaning we all need to help recruit just one more agency or just one more officer.  If you know of an agency wanting to get involved please let us know so we can assist them. Please continue to mentor agencies and bring new ones into the Torch Run Family.  This year the North Carolina Department of Public Safety came on board in a BIG way! We are excited about their partnership with the Law Enforcement Torch Run and they are doing great things!

We need to continue our pace if we are going to reach our $1.3 million goal by the end of the year. We are confident this can be done if each agency continues to work towards the goals we set in January 2017. We have a variety of state fundraising events in the next few months beginning with the Plane Pull in Raleigh on April 29, 2017. We also have Over the Edge on September 30 in Raleigh. Remember to recruit teams; your agency will get the credit toward your fundraising total.

We would also like to invite agencies to participate in the Final Leg in Raleigh as part of the SONC Summer Games. We will have a Circle of Honor during the Opening Ceremonies at Reynolds Coliseum located on the NC State University campus.  The officers who participate will be rewarded by cheers from the crowd of more than 2,500 athletes, coaches, family members, volunteers, sponsors, and guests. We will need volunteers to assist with handing out medals during the games so mark your calendar for June 2-3, 2017.  If you plan to attend, contact Leslie Moyar at

We would like to welcome Garrett Richardson. Garrett recently joined the SONC staff as the new NC LETR manager.

Thanks for all you do for Special Olympics athletes.  We are  making a difference.

With best regards,
