For most people, swimming means a day at the beach or an afternoon spent lounging by the pool. For Daniel Hunsucker, a Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro athlete, swimming has been an amazing opportunity to help coach, befriend other athletes and share his talent with the community.
Over the years, Hunsucker has become an avid participant on the Guilford/Greensboro Aquatics team, acting as both an athlete and mentor for younger athletes on the team.
From the beginning, Hunsucker’s friends and family noticed his innate leadership characteristics.
“He is very good with people. He enjoys the interaction and he thrives on it. He is very good with younger athletes,” said Tina Hunsucker, Hunksucker’s mother.
Outside of the pool, Hunsucker has become a leader in his community as a participant in with InFocus, an international organization that works with individuals with intellectual disabilities to help them photograph important moments in their lives.
“He took pictures of his job and he took many pictures fishing with his dad, one in particular that was displayed in Washington, D.C. for an international meeting.”
Hunsucker’s experience and leadership traits have helped him become both a representative for InFocus and for the Greensboro Aquatic Center. After partnering with a Division III collegiate swim team, Hunsucker’s coach asked him to speak at a banquet about his passion for swimming.
“There were almost a thousand people there and when he got up there to speak, it was awesome,” said Tina Hunsucker.
Throughout it all, Hunsucker continues to act as a role model for younger athletes and for his own group of peers. He currently works in Nutritional Services at the Women’s Hospital in Greensboro.
For Hunsucker, his experience as a leader both inside the pool and out are leading to an exceptionally bright future. “He likes to help everyone out and one day, he wants to eventually become an Aquatics coach,” said Tina Hunsucker.
Congratulations Daniel Hunsucker on being named 2016 Special Olympics NC July Athlete of the Month!
