Damian Chwalek—2016 Special Olympics NC October Athlete of the Month

fred-and-damianAfter ten years in Special Olympics, Mecklenburg County athlete Damian Chwalek has enjoyed giving back to his community in as many ways as possible.

“Damian embodies all the qualities of a Special Olympics athlete,” says local program coordinator Greg Morrill. “He is an accomplished athlete and leader in the Special Olympics movement in Mecklenburg County.”

Morrill also describes Chwalek as “always eager to try a new sport.” Though Chwalek primarily plays basketball, golf and flag football, he decided to try playing softball not long ago. Now it is one of his favorite sports! Although he enjoys playing softball, his favorite part about trying it was sharing his experience with other athletes and encouraging them to try something new, too.

Beyond sports, Chwalek is also eager to contribute to his community however he can. Chwalek has dedicated his time to volunteering with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Charlotte Archdiocese Food Pantry. He also volunteers weekly at the Special Olympics North Carolina office in Charlotte, where he helps with filing.

“I’ve lived in Mecklenburg County for 18 years, so it is great to give back by volunteering,” Chwalek explained.

Throughout his time as a Special Olympics athlete, Chwalek has enjoyed representing Mecklenburg County in numerous roles—athlete, volunteer and leader. These past ten years have even inspired Chwalek to think about his dream job:

“I would love to be the local coordinator for Mecklenburg County one day!”

Congratulations Damian Chwalek on being named 2016 Special Olympics NC October Athlete of the Month!
