Walter Timmons and his Unified Partner Randy Walker will go for
gold in the medal round of 18-hole alternate shot division when they hit
the links today. In his own words, Walter recaps Tuesday's terrific round
and his overall experience at National Games
I'm playing great. I'm hitting my irons real straight and playing course
management and staying away from the fringe. My driver has not been my
friend since I got to Iowa. I keep hooking it right. Randy's playing well
with his driver, though so I'm gonna rely on him for that. I can wake
my driver up again at some point but I just gotta be more confident.
We played so good today! The course is beautiful, no trees in the way
but deep fringe that is tall and rough and surrounded by water. We shot
a 103 the first day and then today [Tuesday] we dropped a lot to an 87!
On one hole, I sunk a long birdie using Randy's putter. It was going
downhill, just on the fringe on a par 4 hole, I chipped it and it hooked
left and went right in! My new clubs [donated by Pine Hollow Golf Club
in Clayton, NC] are working so well for me!
I'm meeting lots of new friends and having a terrific time. This campus
is beautiful. I just wish I could get some paper and a pen so I can draw
the stuff I see. I was able to get a picture with me and Tom Arnold on
Sunday [at Opening Ceremonies] and up-close pictures of Hootie & the
Blowfish for Randy.
One thing is for sure, though, nobody's going to distract me from my
game because I came here with a job to do. When it's time for business
everything but my game is out of my mind. We will be playing against the
top three low scorers in our division in the final round, I know it. If
we stay in our game and keep playing course management, we could come
home with the Gold medal! Randy was saying he wasn't sure and I told him
"No, Randy, there's no such thing as I can't, we're going to do it!"
I grew up learning that from my military father and it's true.
Walter and Randy tee-off at Coldwater Golf Course Wednesday morning.
