Stacey Streit-Spry suffered a serious knee injury just two weeks
before National Games. She can only participate in one of her powerlifting
events now but she is very happy to have been able to make the trip. In
her own words, she describes her experience during the first two days
It's been fun! Today we (Team NC-powerlifting) went to Festival Village.
They had some games there for us and you could get into a real race car
from Kyle Petty. Tim (Troyer) played a video skateboard game that he could
stand on. He really liked it and it was cool to see him try it. We walked
all around and got some free gum and candy. We took half the gum they
had. I think we all came back with five packs or more. We got bracelets
too that say TravelIowa.com. I also saw Tom Arnold and asked him to take
a picture and he did it. He was a very nice man.
I'm still having fun but I am disappointed since I tore my meniscus tendon
in my left knee. My doctor told me I could not lift weights but then Dr.
(Tim) Taft (of the University of Chapel Hill and Special Olympics NC board
member) told me I could at least do the bench press. My knee hurts when
I walk on it a lot but this is a wonderful experience and I'm so pleased
to be a part of it. I'm really here supporting my teammates because this
event is about Special Olympics not just me.
I've met lots of people so far and traded for lots of pins. I have pins
from Texas, Rhode Island and Hawaii. My favorite is Texas because my idol
is from San Antonio, Texas. My idol is Shawn Micheals a WWE wrestler.
He's the type of person who no matter how much he's hurting, he pushes
through and he does what he needs to do and does it for his fans. I started
watching the WWE two years ago and then I got his book. We have a lot
in common. He has a son born in January and so do I and my daughter was
born in 2004 and so was his. Plus we both went to a High School named
Sacred Heart. It would be such an honor to meet him one day. He's just
a good person to look up too.
Stacey will compete in the bench press on Thursday morning.
