 Derrick
Green, of Supply, will compete as a member of the Brunswick County five-on-five
basketball team in the 2005 Special Olympics North Carolina Basketball
Tournament in Greenville, Mar. 18-20. This competition will bring together
nearly 1,000 athletes from 45 counties and agencies statewide.
Derrick's passion for basketball is unmistakable on the court. In the
past three years, he has helped the Brunswick Hawks claim two gold medals
and one silver medal at state-level tournaments. Recently, Derrick was
able to shoot hoops with the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats at a basketball clinic
held for Special Olympics athletes in preparation for the upcoming competition
in Greenville.
"Keith Bogans told me when I was dribbling against him that I got
game," said Derrick. "I was like 'Oh my gosh!' I was proud of
myself."
Derrick has worked hard to sharpen his skills and become a better competitor
on the court. While he hates to lose, Derrick makes an effort to show
sportsmanship to his opponents during games.
"Derrick loves to compete," says Anita Dwyer, Brunswick County
local coordinator. "With the support of his coach, Tom Connolly,
Derrick has really moved forward as a great all-around athlete."
In addition to his involvement with Special Olympics, Derrick is a member
of the grounds crew at Brunswick Community College. He also attends continuing
education courses at a vocational school to develop his job skills.
