Anthony Cuthrell had never been on a plane before
traveling on a charter jet from Charlotte to Des Moines, Iowa for the
National Games. The plane was delayed on the tarmac for two hours before
taking off. In his own words, Anthony describes his experience.......
I was scared and very nervous. I didnt know if the plane would crash
or not. Id seen on TV how airplanes crash. We (the Team NC soccer
team) said a prayer in the airport because I needed to make sure someone
was watching over us and that made me feel comfortable. I was so nervous.
I was ringing my hands and being real quiet. When we got on the plane,
I asked what was going on because we had to wait for such a long time.
I told Coach Steve (Bass) if the plane was going to be like this I wanted
off! When we finally started to move and then on take off, I closed my
eyes and and gripped really hard onto my seat. After about 15-20 minutes,
I got used to it and then I was enjoying the flight although I was still
nervous the whole time and wanted to get off. I looked outsided and saw
alot of square lands and small buildings. I took a bunch of pictures of
it so people at home could see what it looked like from way up there.
Coach Steve said we were up about 30,000 feet! I couldnt believe
how tiny everything was. For most of the trip, I played cards with the
girl next to me who was from South Carolina. She was nice and we had a
good time. It made the trip go by really fast. It only took us and hour
or more to get there. When we landed, I was ready to go! I just wanted
to get off! I went running down the steps of the plane. I got yelled at
for running but I just wanted to get onto solid ground because I wanted
to feel safe. Im very proud of myself for flying and happy the plane
didnt crash like I saw on TV with the Twin Towers but I am still
nervous about flying.I dont know if Ill be able to do it again.
I cant think about that right now. Now I am here to play soccer
that is what I am going to concentrate on now!
Anthony and the Team NC soccer team team will begin
competition on Tuesday and fly home on Saturday, July 7.
